I notice the previous comments are a few years old, but I would like to tell you about my version of "Six-Layer Dinner". My husband and I have been married 55 years (Jan 5) and this recipe came from my mother-in-law (Iowa-born) and was a family favorite. I use hamburger, sliced potatoes, diced tomatoes, about half a cup of Instant Rice, diced onions, tomato sauce. Over the years I've added a small can of diced green chiles which adds a little oomph to the flavor. also garlic salt or minced garlic. As another reviewer remarked, it does take a long time to cook, so I usually precook the potatoes. I know potatoes and rice sound starchy, but it's so right! To keep it from being too dry, I sometimes add a little water. My husband and I always look forward to this one-dish meal.

My mother used to call this "Seven Layer Dinner" and used carrots as well. I loved it reheated (if there was any left over). I highly recommend it.

It's so unfortunate that some people get so excited when they know something that someone else doesn't know...and instead of helping (like a teacher), just find it hilarious to humiliate. Some people shouldn't be cooks, but then some shouldn't be teachers.

I made this recipie today...it needed to be more specific in the type of tomato to use. I used 2 cups of diced tomatoes...made the dish way too dry after cooking 2 hours on that high temp. I put half a can of tomato juice in the pan for next time.

Some of the people who submit comments should probably NOT be cooking at all! If they read the recipe they should follow it...nothing SO hard about that! Now, what cook doesn't know that 2 Cups = 16 oz. of meat or anything else (1 lb). A 'brilliant deduction' would also be to assume that the thinly sliced medium onion would be placed on top of the casserole. Perhaps they should only order 'take-out', as I'd hate them to even attempt to cook for me.

You are TOO funny! But I agree. I am shocked at how many young people (I'm 61) don't know how to cook these days or, in this case, don't even understand measures. I wanted to be a Home Economics teacher and it's a good thing I didn't because there are no more Home Ec classes in most schools anymore. Keep writing and cracking me up!

Catlady6866 Great post! It amazes me how people change the recipe and then wonder why it doesn't turn out. This is really a very simple recipe to make. Layer potatoes, celery, onion, meat, green peppers and canned tomatoes (yes they come with juice and nothing says to drain it.) You could add garlic, beans, carrots, squash or any of your favorite veggies if you like. Most casseroles are not a science but a quick, easy and delicious dinner that a family will love.

I made this dish in a crockpot one day because I was really busy and had to fix a meal for a shut-in I layered it as the recipe listed it and let it cook for about hours while I did other things in the house The fragrance of that meal made me ravenous When I checked for doneness the meal was done to perfection and the taste was marvelous I took the meal to my friend and she has raved about it ever since This is now my go-to meal for friends who may be having health issues This is also very good made with ground chicken or ground turkey There is no need to brown the meat before cooking whether you use the oven or the crock pot The juices from the meat actually make this a wonderfully tasty meal and clean up is easy -- especially if you…Read More use the crock pot I rate this one a perfect

people are mixing wet and dry measurements here.....you can't do that! 2 C. hamburg is not necessarily a pound. in this recipe, I doubt the amount of hamburg is crucial....use what you need to feed your family, as long as the liquid you add is enough to compensate for the addition. I would think a pound would suffice for a family of 4-5....which brings me to my complaint re recipies here....they never give you the yield!

I make recipes like this all the time, and I would suggest NOT to have your oven that HOT!! 325 is plenty....low and slow! I use a canned tomato sauce, intead of spaghetti sauce, it's cheaper to use! I also use cabbage at times and it is a real economical and delicious meal!!

If I ask the meat person for 2 cups of meat I am sure they will think I have lost it. So what is the weight increment of 2 cups raw hamburger? 1/2 lb?? 1 lb??

8 ounces = 1 cup, 16 ounces = 1 pound (or 1 pint), so ask for 1 pound of ground meat.

A cup is 8 ounces, so 2 cups should be 16 ounces or 1 lb. of meat.

8 ounces to a cup is a VOLUME measurement. 16 ounces to a pound is a WEIGHT measurement. The 2 are not interchangeable

Do you brown the meat or break it up or what. When it says to add the onion does it mean the chopped and the sliced at the same time? Directions are really sketchy. What size caserole dish?

As the cook time is 2 hours I don't believe it would be necessary to brown the meat before adding it to the casserole. It's a layered dinner. The potatoes appear to be the ingredient that will take the longest to cook. I'm sure that the juices from the meat will make the dish a little more juicy. I haven't tried it yet, but intend to do so this week. Will let you know how it turns out.

The sliced onion would likely be the very top layer of the casserole. At least, that's where I'm going to put it.

I used this receipe from the Betty Crocker cook book. It is almost the saame receipe and we love it. Get lean ground beef or ground sirloin. Do not drain the tomatoes, I use diced tomatoes. Turns out nice. Use a casserole corning dish. a bout a 2 qt. size

Made recipe tonight. Recipe should be more detailed, what size dish to use, what kind of canned tomatoes to use,(whole, diced etc) stating that sliced onion is optional, where do you put them in the dinner. The dinner turned out very good. I used ground sirloin instead of check for less grease. I also use both types of onions, (we love onions) I do think it needs a little more liquid...Will make this again no doubt, but will try a a few things different....

great recipe change the following for raw hamburger I used 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast cut up for green peppers I used green beans and carrots a cup each I mixed the onion and celery finished the casserole off with a cheesy biscuit topping the last 12 hour of cooking. The recipe for me took care of 4 generous servings for the men in my family but I would say that this depends on how your family eats. Some members of my family are light eaters while others are big eaters.

If the casserole is turning out too greasy for you try using a lean ground beef instead. I mix equal amounts of ground beef and ground pork. I also change it out a bit by sometimes adding a packet of onion soup mix to the beef. Or you can add a taco seasoning packet and 5 minutes before it is done drain ing grease off, sprinkle with cheese, and put in oven until completely melted. This is a great dish and easy to make it your own recipe.

This was a great easy recipe. My husband is a picky eater and he really liked it. His only comment was that it could have used more ground beef. My 14 month-old also loved this. There were not too many spices for her. Made this and a loaf of homemade bread. YUM!!!

Great basic casserole. Exchange ground pork or chicken for the beef. Change the seasonings to a spicy blend. Add some cheese of top.
